the popcorn hour #02 - dirty john ♥

Grab your popcorn and nachos because I have started a brand new series for Fairytale Kiss. Say hello to The Popcorn Hour. Every week or two I will be talking about films, TV shows, Netflix, the cinema, theatre shows, podcasts and everything else in-between. I did create a Netflix series a few years back and I really loved chatting about my favourite films. I am a big movie lover so if you want to hear me ramble about shows I love and hate, hopefully you will enjoy this series. I do want to create a series on my Youtube channel but one step at a time. Also, I was very happy with my cheesy, overly staged popcorn photo shoot, who knew my fluffy slippers would come in handy?
So let's dive straight into the first blog post of The Popcorn Hour. If you follow me on Twitter and Instagram then you will know that I have been talking about the Netflix Dirty John series a lot. Prepare for spoilers! One of my friends mentioned Dirty John a few weeks ago and I decided to watch the first episode on the train home. I'll be honest, the first half of episode one didn't really draw me in. I had no idea what to expect and I kept waiting for a big reveal or plot twist early on...this probably shows how poor my attention span is but it actually keeps true to the real story. The series is based around Debra Newell, a successful interior designer with fabulous outfits and a keen business mind. Remember, this is based on a true story, this woman is a real person and the story is still hard for me to believe, it really is shocking and terrifying. But I'm jumping ahead.

We are introduced to Debra and she is getting ready for a first date with someone that she has been talking to on an over 50 dating site/app. You are introduced to her daughter Veronica Newell, (her real name is Jacquelyn Newell but she has really distanced herself from the podcast and series, which is why they changed her name for the Netflix show), now Juno Temple who plays Veronica does an incredible job. For me, she is one of the highlights of the show. First impressions, you believe she is just spoiled and a typical airhead but throughout the series, you see how incredibly feisty and protective she is and she trusted her instincts right away. I absolutely love her character and the scene that caught my interest was when John Meehan arrives at the front door.

Now, I'll be honest, nothing really grabbed my attention when John Meehan arrived on screen and I think that's the point. He looks harmless and this is what makes him so dangerous. Played by Eric Bana, (hello, we all remember Bana in Troy fighting Brad Pitt right?), Meehan appears to be your average Joe. In fact, when Veronica opens the door and we first meet John, Veronica assumes he is a delivery man because of his casual clothes. She begins to eye him up and becomes cautious when John begins to pick ornaments up in the living room area. I love that Veronica instantly calls him out and a tense relationship begins between the two characters which will escalate to horrifying levels. She thinks he is simply pricing up the apartment and is only interested in money. This is pretty much the tip of the iceberg. You're in for a rough ride this series.

Apart from Debra's youngest daughter, Terra Newell, the series is smooth sailing for me. Terra's irritating voice is slightly hard to handle at times and I'm not sure whether this is on purpose to reflect the real Terra Newell. I was relieved when I saw on Twitter because everyone shared the same irritation as me when it came to her acting. It made it unclear on her age because she sounds incredibly young, almost early teens. Minus this, the series is incredibly jaw dropping. Eric Bana stole the stage for me, I was not expecting him to show such an onscreen presence and the particular scene in episode six left me feeling intimated and shocked. Now this is an easy to watch series, the twists in each episode keep you hooked and you really don't expect the ending. If you are looking for a fast paced crime thriller, Dirty John will leave you on the edge of your seat and screaming at your TV screen. It has been a long time since I watched an entire series in just two days. I couldn't turn Netflix off! It is crazy to think the Newell family had to experience the nightmare that is John Meehan.  4/5 stars
