I am back with a brand new Popcorn Hour post and I am starting the post with my overly staged popcorn photo and fluffy slippers. For today's Popcorn Hour review I wanted to talk about the Netflix documentary series, The Defiant Ones. Grab your nachos and iced tea because I will be rambling today. I have been meaning to talk about this series for a while now and I am looking forward to sharing this post because it is a pretty different genre. In case you didn't know, The Defiant Ones originally aired as a four-part documentary series on HBO and BBC 4 in 2017. I hadn't actually heard of it until I saw it on Netflix but I'm glad it came up on my recommendations. Let's start from the top...
Directed by Allen Hughes, The Defiant Ones follows the musical journey of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. From the beginning of their careers into the music industry, the documentary follows their journey, capturing the very beginning and how they first started working with each other. Now, I know this doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Unless a documentary involves criminals or Whitney Houston I am not a big music fan, and you wouldn't normally catch me watching a documentary about it. That being said, the moment I pressed play, I was hooked. It is hard to explain how the opening credits caught my attention, whether it was The Untouchables soundtrack booming through the TV or the carefully edited scenes - I knew this documentary would be interesting and different.
From Stevie Nicks to Gwen Stefani, Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre have played an incredible role in the history of music. Now I know what you are thinking, why watch this documentary if you are not a big music fan? Personally, I found this documentary incredibly inspiring and very motivational. I don't think you need to be a big music fan to simply appreciate how ambitious Iovine and Dre are. It really is incredible to see how they think and what kept them motivated when they were creating history. From partnering up with Apple and earning billions, to Iovine creating his record label, I loved every minute of this four part series.
From the fast editing, the stories and the impressive list of interview guests, this documentary series has it all. I was gripped from start to finish. I felt inspired and also entertained watching this. I haven't stopped talking about it. Iovine and Dr. Dre are very involved in this series. They sit down in front of the camera and explain in great detail the high and lows of their careers and why their partnership works so well. You can see their ambition and talent throughout and with the snappy editing and archive footage used, it is incredible viewing. ♥
